Honda GX270 vs GX390 vs GX690: Which Engine For Your Equipment?

Honda's GX series is the gold standard for commercial small-engine power. They're on plate compactors, pressure washers, generators, pumps, mixers, trowels — pretty much any piece of construction equipment that uses 4-stroke gas power. But the lineup is wide: GX35 all the way up to GX690 V-twins. If you're repowering a piece of equipment or specifying for new construction, picking the right Honda matters.

Here's the practical breakdown.

Honda GX series at a glance

Model Displacement Net HP Common applications
GX35 35 cc 1.3 HP Hand-held power tools (tampers, augers)
GX100 98 cc 2.8 HP Rammers (Sakai RS65, Wacker BS), small pumps
GX120 121 cc 4.0 HP Small plate compactors, small pumps
GX160 163 cc 4.8 HP Mid-size plate compactors, walk-behind trowels, pressure washers, small generators
GX200 196 cc 5.5 HP Walk-behind concrete saws, mid-size pressure washers
GX270 270 cc 8.5 HP 9 CF concrete mixers (e.g., Essick EM90SH8), mid-size pressure washers, mid-size generators
GX340 337 cc 10.7 HP Larger plate compactors, larger pressure washers
GX390 389 cc 11.7 HP 14 HP-spec equipment (Essick mixers, walk-behind saws, pressure washers, generators)
GX630 688 cc V-twin 20.8 HP Industrial / commercial mowers, ride-on trowels
GX690 688 cc V-twin 22.1 HP Large commercial mowers, generators, larger ride-on trowels

Picking the right engine for your repower

Going down in power range is fine. A GX270 can replace a GX240 without major modification — same shaft diameter (3/4"), same mount pattern.

Going up in power range requires checking the equipment. The frame may not be reinforced for the additional torque. The drive belt may need to be re-sized. The fuel tank may not have enough capacity for the larger engine's burn rate.

Mount pattern matters. Within a series (e.g., GX160 → GX200) the mount pattern is almost always identical. Between series (e.g., GX240 → GX270 → GX340) check the bolt pattern carefully. We can confirm fitment if you tell us the equipment make/model.

Crank options matter. Honda offers different crank diameters and tapers — straight keyed (most common for direct-drive equipment), tapered (for self-clutch pulleys), and PTO with shaft adapter. The GX690RHTXA2 we stock is the 1-1/8" crank diameter PTO variant with 17-amp charging system and control box — primarily for generator-set use.

Specific application guidance

Concrete mixer repowers

  • 9 cubic foot Essick (EM90 series) — GX270 (9HP, 8HP spec) is the OEM choice. Direct replacement.
  • 12 cubic foot Essick (EM12M) — 13HP rated. GX390 is the closest match.

Plate compactor repowers

  • Wacker WP1550, WP1540 — GX160 (5.5 HP) is the OEM equivalent.
  • Multiquip MVH-series reversible — GX240, GX270, or GX340 depending on plate weight.

Pressure washer repowers

  • 3000 PSI residential-duty — GX200 or GX270 typical.
  • 4000+ PSI commercial-duty — GX390 or GX630 V-twin.

Generator repowers

  • 6500W gas portable — GX390 is the OEM standard.
  • 8000W+ — GX630 V-twin or GX690.

Honda parts T&L stocks

For every engine in the lineup, we stock the common service parts that fail first:

  • Carburetors and rebuild kits
  • Air filters and elements
  • Spark plugs (NGK BPR6ES standard, BPR7ES for higher-output applications)
  • Recoil starter assemblies
  • Ignition coils
  • Fuel pumps (mechanical and electric for fuel-injected variants)
  • Voltage regulators (where applicable)
  • Gaskets and oil seals
  • Complete engine assemblies for repowers

We carry both genuine Honda parts and tested aftermarket equivalents. Aftermarket carbs in particular have come a long way — modern aftermarket Honda carburetors from reputable manufacturers perform within OEM tolerances and cost 40-60% less.

Fuel injection vs. carburetor (newer engines)

The newest GX series engines are available with EFI (electronic fuel injection) — designated like GX390EFI. Pros: better cold-start, easier emissions compliance, slightly better fuel economy. Cons: higher upfront cost, more complex repair, requires battery and charging system.

For mobile construction equipment, carbureted GX engines are still the practical choice — simpler, easier to field-service, no electrical dependencies.
